Why is Trae Young so hated by Knicks fans at Madison Square Garden?

One of the biggest rivalries in basketball over the past few years has been between the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young.

If you’re wondering how this all started, it all started during the 2021 NBA postseason. It was the first time Young had reached the playoffs during his professional career and the first game of the series was at Madison Square Garden.

Young played exceptionally well, scoring 32 points and dishing out 10 assists. At one point late in the game, Young bowed out after a go-ahead basket. He also silenced the crowd by pointing to his mouth.

The Hawks won the series, with the guard averaging 29.2 points per game during the sweep.

Since this incident, however, the crowd did not give him the warmest reception in New York. In fact, even during non-Hawks games, the crowds continue to chant all kinds of crazy stuff in Young in viral videos.

While he missed the next game Atlanta played at Madison Square Garden, his return to New York resulted in 45 points. He said it it wasn’t even that strong in the arena.

Young then shows up wearing shoes labeled “King of Broadway” but loses the game. This only added fuel to the fire for the fans.

New York and Atlanta will have another chance to ignite the rivalry when the Knicks and Hawks play in the NBA Cup on Wednesday night.
