In the 30th game of Big Bash League (BBL) 14 between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchersheld at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney Sixers’ star batter Steve Smith delivered one of the game’s most memorable moments with a spectacular shot that sent fans into awe.
The action took place during the 15th over of the Sydney Sixers’ innings when Andrew Tye of Perth Scorchers is bowling. Tye delivered an overpitched ball just outside off stump, and Smith, with impeccable timing and finesse, opened his bat-face at the last moment, expertly guiding the ball to deep backward point for in a beautiful 74 meter six. It was a very unusual shot—one that looked deceptively easy but was, in fact, a very difficult blow to land. The crowd erupted as Smith showed his full class and control, producing a shot that perfectly encapsulated his batting brilliance.

In the Sixers’ innings, Smith’s batting was less impressive. The opener showed his amazing skill and composure as he scored a stunning 121 off just 64 balls. His knock included 10 fours and seven sixes, hitting the ball at an impressive strike rate of 189.06. Smith’s hard hitting and consistent stroke play set the tone for the match, and he remained unbeaten, guiding his team to a dominant total. This century was Smith’s third in the Big Bash League, making him the joint record-holder for most centuries in the tournament’s history, tied with Ben McDermott.
The Sydney Sixers, asked to bat first, put up a mammoth total of 220/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Along with Smith’s stunning knock, the Sixers’ total was boosted by the valuable contribution of their captain, Moises Henriques. Henriques, who played an important supporting role, scored a quickfire 46 runs from 28 balls, including 6 fours and 2 sixes. Henriques’ innings proved crucial in accelerating the run rate, adding depth to the team as a whole.
