Meta said on Wednesday it is close to solving a technical problem that is causing widespread disruption to its apps, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
“We are aware that a technical issue is affecting the ability of some users to access the applications. We’re working to get things back as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” Meta Newsroom said. X Wednesday evening
WhatsApp and Instagram both have been confirmed to be outages through X, and many users are reporting that they can’t access Meta’s apps.
The outage lasted more than three hours. Around 5:30pm EST, Meta published that it was “99% of the way” to solving the problem completely.
On its outage tracking site Downdetector, where users can report problems, Instagram had logged nearly 70,000 reports by mid-afternoon Wednesday. Facebook had 105,000 outage reports, Facebook Messenger about 14,000 and messaging app WhatsApp about 12,500. Threads, an X competitor, also saw an uptick in outage reports. As Downdetector reports itself, it probably doesn’t reflect the extent of the problems.
