Evertonthe derby vs Arsenal on Saturday was years in the making for a manager Sean Dychewhich tells of using primitive technology to find meager profits as a youth coach in the Watford.
No-one has scored more goals from corners and free-kicks than Saturday’s Emirates outfit, but Dyche insists learning how to maximize set-pieces is nothing new.
“People have analyzed sets for years and years,” he revealed. “I first remember doing it as a youth team manager in 2007 when you needed two different screens.
“It was called Final Cut Pro. You’ll be sitting there learning how to do it, transferring information from one screen to another; lift, drag, drop, stop, timeline. That was a pain in the ass!
“Then the coding comes to a laptop, you can buy it right off the shelf and boom.”
The Merseysiders have scored half of their goals under Dyche from set-pieces and are the only team as troublesome to stop as Arsenal with James Tarkowski mentioned alongside Gunners Gabriel as the biggest aerial threats in Premier League.
Everton boss Sean Dyche recalls using technology to analyze set pieces as a youth coach at Watford in 2007.
Dyche’s Everton are preparing to face the considerable threat Arsenal pose from corners
“We’re probably laying the groundwork for our games on set at Everton in pre-season,” Dyche added.
“Maybe Arsenal have a psychological advantage because they are very good at them, but we found that too.
“Virtually all teams mention them as a threat when they play us. It brings its own psychology!’
Arsenal have scored seven times from set pieces in the Premier League this season and Everton six, accounting for almost half of their total goals.
These days, Dyche hands the reins over to coaches Steve Stone and Ian Woan, as well as a team of analysts, but admits he still depends on having players who want to win head-to-head.
“Passing and attacking the ball will never go away,” he said.
“Brian Clough was talking about it in 1987 when I first went to Nottingham Forest. “Put the ball in the box and someone has to come in and attack it.”
“Over time, the delivery gets better, the movement gets better, the physicality of the players gets better and their jumping ability gets better. But this one thing you need; just the sheer will and desire to score.
Dyche insists there is much more to Arsenal’s title-chasing game than just set pieces
Dyche says his side are preparing against any team, not just Arsenal, who have specialist coaches and are known as the best in the country.
However, the Everton boss, who should have striker Armando Broia fit again, does not consider Mikel Arteta’s title contenders to be one-trick ponies.
“Just because they have strong stats on standard pieces, I haven’t forgotten their other threats. They can still open you up and have a lot of good players,” he said.
“I certainly don’t think they’re ready to play as a team. They are just a team that can add that and they did.
