(Newspring) – Democrats missed the chance to grill a candidate for the defense minister Pete Hegeth on topics of national security while favors questions about his “drinking” and “femaleization,” said Donald Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton.
“I think the way the confirmation hearing was conducted, it was fully open to the Democrats to try to lead the case against Hegeth on the basis of competence, and they did not,” he said.
Bolton told Newsnation’s Elizabeth Vargas That Hegeth’s expertise was not completely put to the test during the consultation.
“What do you want to do in a tripolar atomic world where China joins Russia and the United States (in terms of nuclear weapons capacity)? So we just don’t know what (hegeth) know or don’t know – but we’re going to find out one way or the other, “Bolton said.
He believes that Hegeth, except for an unforeseen event, will be confirmed as Defense Minister on Friday night.
Bolton’s security details are recalled
He also addressed President Donald Trump’s decision to revoke his security details, a step that could potentially jeopardize the life of the former diplomat.
“I think this attitude of Trump shows that his real motivation was completely political,” Bolton said. “This is part of the retaliatory campaign.”
Trump recalled the government’s security protection for former Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo, his top assistant, Brian Hook, and Bolton, all of whom have been exposed to threats from Iran since taking tough attitudes to the Islamic Republic under Trump’s first administration.
Bolton, who has been murdered by Iran, said the republic is still seeking to take revenge for the US attack on Iranian defense officer Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
“President Biden ordered back at the end of 2021 that I should receive protection,” Bolton said. “It was ordered on the basis that the reason why the Iranians threatened – and not just threatened, tried – to hire assassins to murder me was because I performed my official responsibility as a national security adviser.”
