The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has upheld a penalty imposed on Ty Majeski for failure to meet media obligations due to his commitment to in-person voting.
The media event in question, Playoffs Media Day, is like a crucial promotional moment leading up to the season finale. Held in North Carolina on November 5th, it fell just days before the climactic face-off at Phoenix Raceway. Majeski’s absence prompted NASCAR to fine him $12,500, citing a violation of rulebook section 4.4.A, which pertains to “failure to fulfill media obligations.”
“The driver failed to fulfill the contract with NASCAR. One of the most, if not the most, important media obligations of the entire season.”
Majeski stood by his decision and explained:
“I felt I had to do my duty as a (US) citizen to vote,” Majeski explained at the time.
“My team owners and I, Duke (Thorson), Rhonda (Thorson), Allison, we all made the decision to exercise this right.”
He added:
“We certainly knew about it. I didn’t specifically have a lot of communication with NASCAR before. I let everybody internally at ThorSport handle that communication until I wasn’t there on Tuesday. So yeah, I feel like they knew our position. unprecedented, this has never happened before, everyone knew it was election day for a long time.”
A NASCAR spokesman also noted that the times of the media commitments could have been changed if they knew it conflicted with his voting.
As the situation is, it is uncertain how Majeski and ThorSport Racing intend to continue. Admittal of the appeal by the panel, consisting of Hunter Nickell, Cathy Rice and Lake Speed, does not preclude further action.
