UnitedHealthcare CEO who shoots suspect fights extradition

(NewsNation) — The legal representation of Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murder in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, trying to block his extradition to New York from Pennsylvania.

The state of Pennsylvania is pursuing a gubernatorial warrant for the 26-year-old Mangione, who is currently on State Penitentiary Huntingdon. That process could take 30 days, especially now that Mangione is trying to fight it.

As he was escorted into a Pennsylvania courthouse on Tuesday, Mangione shouted to reporters gathered outside.

“It is a complete injustice and an insult to the American people,” he said.

During his arraignment Tuesday, Mangione tried to interrupt and speak to his attorney, Thomas Dickey.

Dickey told NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo that he believes Mangione will plead not guilty.

“We haven’t seen any evidence. We haven’t seen anything,” Dickey said on “CUOMO” Tuesday. “I don’t want people to jump to these things with prejudice because nobody would ever want that if they were accused or a loved one was accused.”

In the months leading up to the shooting, Mangione’s mother reported him missing to police in San Francisco, California, said New York Police Department Chief of Patrol John Chell.

Mangione’s mother told police her son did not answer phone calls and texts or post on social media.

Several GoFundMe accounts have been set up for people to donate to pay Mangione’s legal bills. GoFundMe says it is working quickly to shut these down.

UnitedHealthcare CEO shot dead

Thompson, 50, was killed just before 7:00 a.m. on December 4 near a Hilton hotel while attending UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor meeting in New York City last Wednesday.

NYPD officers searched for the gunman in New York and Georgia. On December 9, police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, responded to reports of a man matching authorities’ description of the suspect at a local McDonald’s.

That’s where Mangione was arrested. The NYPD said Mangione matched the description authorities were looking for and also carried a mask, firearm, suppressor and a fake New Jersey ID linking him to the shooting.
