Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed high praise for one of India’s current cricket icons, referring to him as the greatest white-ball player the world has ever seen. Ganguly’s comments come despite the player’s recent dip in form, including struggles in recent matches.
Ganguly praised Virat Kohli as a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer, comparable to Indian women cricketers Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj. He hailed Kohli’s remarkable feat of scoring 80 international centuries and called him the greatest white-ball player ever. However, the former India captain expressed surprise at the decline in Kohli’s form after his century in the first Test in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 AGAINST australian in Perth, noted that despite his struggles in India, he expected a strong series in Australia, which unfortunately did not happen.
“Virat Kohli is a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer, like Jhulan, like Mithali. To score 80 hundreds in international cricket is amazing. For me, he is the greatest white-ball player ever the world saw. But I was really surprised by his batting in Australia after the hundred in Perth. He struggled here in India, but I thought after the hundred in Perth, it was a big series for him,” Ganguly said in an interview with Revsportz in Kolkata.
Despite these challenges, Ganguly expressed Kohli’s ability to overcome challenges, highlighting his resilience and adaptability. The Kolkata boy acknowledged that every player has strengths and weaknesses but stressed the importance of adapting to those weaknesses over time. Ganguly believes that Kohli has a lot of cricket left in him.
“But it happens. I think every player has his weaknesses and strengths, but what matters is how you adapt to your weaknesses as you play a lot of cricket over a period of time. I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in Virat Kohli,” he added.
