Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy record so far: An incredible run for his IPL franchise and domestic side



Shreyas Iyer emerged as a central talking point once again recently Punjab Kings (PBKS) appointed him the captain of their team for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL). PBKS bought the 30-year-old for a whopping INR 26.75 crore in the latest auction after his triumphant run to clinch the prestigious league title in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The Preity Zinta-owned franchise will be hoping that with Iyer’s captaincy, their side will take the season ahead to clinch their first IPL glory.

Shreyas Iyer’s emphatic run as an IPL skipper

Iyer established himself successfully IPL captain, led 71 matches with 40 wins, 31 losses, and a commendable winning percentage of 56.35. His leadership journey began with Delhi capitalswhere he captained the team from 2018 to 2020, guiding them to their first ever IPL final in 2020 and achieving a win rate of 56.09% in 41 matches. In the 2022 auction, he moved to KKR and quickly made an impact, guiding the team to its third IPL title in his third season, with a winning percentage of 56.70 in 30 games. Remarkably, Iyer became the youngest captain in the IPL at 23 years and 142 days during the 2018 season. He also holds the unique distinction of being the only captain to lead two different teams – Capitals in 2020 and KKR in 2024 – till the IPL finals.

Iyer’s dream is with Mumbai in the domestic circle

Shreyas Iyer is a prolific performer in domestic cricket, showing his class across formats. In First-Class cricket, he played 80 matches, amassing 6,335 runs at an impressive average of 49.10, including 15 centuries and 33 half-centuries, with a highest score of 233.

In List A cricket, he featured in 149 matches, amassing 5,909 runs with consistency and brilliance. His outstanding performances during the 2024 season were crucial to his team’s successes. Shreyas led from the front to take the wins in the Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the year 2024, highlighting his full capabilities as a leader. With achievements in the domestic fold in 3 different competitions and an IPL title under his belt, Iyer has won 4 titles in the last year as a captain for his franchise and his domestic side .
