Indian cricket has been engulfed in debates over the succession plan for the national team. With Rohit SharmaThe tenure as captain is under scrutiny after the 3-1 loss to Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT)the spotlight has shifted to finding a suitable successor. Now reports from Dainik Jagran suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is to evaluate potential candidates to take the reins post on 2025 Champions Trophy. However, the selection process leads to differences between the head coaches Gautam Gambhir and chairman of the selection committee Ajit Agarkar.
Reports further stated that despite the criticism of his captaincy following the BGT loss, Rohit is set to lead India in both Test and ODI formats till the 2025 Champions Trophy. According to sources, the 37-year-old has announced his intention to remain captain until the BCCI finalizes his successor. The Champions Trophy, administered by Pakistan and the UAEis seen as an important event before a leadership transition is considered.
Reports also indicate that the pacer Jasprit Bumrah a strong contender to take over the captaincy after Rohit. Bumrah, who previously led the team in two Test matches during the BGT series against australianimpressed the board with his leadership skills. His calm demeanor and tactical acumen make him a front-runner for the role, especially given his experience in high-pressure situations.
The debate goes beyond captaincy to the role of vice-captain. Agarkar, head of the selection committee, reportedly favors the wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for the position. Pant’s first experience led Delhi Capitals (DC) on Indian Premier League (IPL) and the national team during the T20I series against South Africa in 2022 adds weight to Agarkar’s argument.
However, head coach Gambhir has a different view. He advocates for the dynamic opener Yashasvi Jaiswal to prepare for leadership. Jaiswal’s outstanding performances in the 2024-25 BGT, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer for India, strengthened his case as a promising future leader. Gambhir’s support for Jaiswal comes from the belief that his aggressive style and hunger for success will bring a new dimension to Indian cricket leadership.
